ACTIVITY IDEAS AND FINGERPLAYS

Use chairs, tables, boxes, and sheets to make playhouses. Let children individualize them.If possible, keep the houses intact for a few days so that they begin to feel like "homes."

Using a box, make and decorate a special home for the Mama Kangaroo Puppet and Baby Kangaroo to live in.

Share What We Like by Anne Rockwell. Have each child draw pictures of the things that they like. Assemble together in a book.

Invite children to draw pictures of what their home looks like from the outside. Encourage them to point out where their room is located. Then have them draw a picture of someplace inside their house. Ask them to draw a map of how to get to their room from the front door of their house.

Baby Kangaroo
Jump, jump, jump
(Make jumping motion with index finger, other fingers and thumb folded over)
Goes the big kangaroo.
I thought there was one,
But I see there are two.
The mother takes her young one
(Index finger of left hands slips up between thumb and fingers of right hand)
Along in a pouch,
Where he can nap like a child
(Incline head on folded hands)
On a couch.
Jump, jump, jump.
Jump, jump, jump.

Two Little Houses
Two little houses closed up tight;
(Two closed fists)
Open up the windows and let in the light.
(Spread hands apart)
Ten little people tall and straight,
(Hold up ten fingers)
Ready for the bus at half past eight!
(Fingers make running motion)

Houses
This is a nest for Mr. Bluebird.
(Cup both hands, palms up, little fingers together)
This is the hive for Mr. Bee.
(Both fists together, palm to palm)
This is the hole for Bunny Rabbit,
(Make hole, fingertips together)
And this is the house for me.
(Fingertips together, make a peak)

The Home
This is the home where we're happy together:
(Interlock fingers to together with fingers hidden in palms)
Open the door and there you can see
(Turn hands over so interlocked fingers so)
Mother and Daddy and Sister and Brother,
Busy and happy and kind as can be.
