This Reading Adventure Treasure Chest Kit has been assembled to provide a thematic list of storytime materials for use by enhanced members and their patrons.  The kit is geared toward the preschool age group yet is flexible enough to capture the interest of toddlers and early school age children.  The Activity Ideas are designed to be aids to use the materials listed in the kits.

ACTIVITY IDEAS AND FINGERPLAYS

Ask each child to draw what their dreams look like.

Share several books before nap time. Sing lullabies. During naptime play the cassette tape softly as children go to sleep.

Make owl puppets from brown paper bags. Precut eyes, ears, and beaks which children can glue on their puppets. Children can color the body of the owls with crayons or you can purchase feathers for gluing.

Get in the mood and decorate your room with stars and constellations on the ceiling. Then read and sing Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. The last page of the picture book holds a special surprise for your children.

Three Little Owls
Three little owls without any home.
(Hold up three fingers)
Three little trees in a row.
(Hold up three fingers on other hand, holding arm higher)
Come build your nests,
(With "tree fingers," motion to come)
In our branches tall,
(Make owls fly to trees)
We'll rock you to and fro.
(Join all fingers and rock with arms)

Going to Bed
This little boy is just going to bed
(Use forefinger for boy)
Down on the pillow he lays his head.
(Lay finger cross-wise on other hand using thumb for pillow)
He wraps himself in the covers tight.
(Use fingers for cover)
And this is the way he sleeps all night.
Morning comes, he opens his eyes.
Off with a toss the covers fly.
Soon he is up and dressed and away.
Ready for fun and play all day.

Stars
At night I see the twinkling stars
(Clasping and opening hands)
And a great big smiling moon.
(Circle arms overhead)
My Mommie tucks me into bed
(Lay finger in cupped hand)
And sings a good-night tune.
(Rocking motions with hands)
