This Reading Adventure
Treasure Chest Kit has been assembled to provide a thematic list of storytime
materials for use by enhanced members and their patrons. The kit is
geared toward the preschool age group yet is flexible enough to capture the
interest of toddlers and early school age children. The Activity Ideas are designed to be aids to use the
materials listed in the kits.

Share Where's That Reptile? then make
camouflage pictures.Provide a collection of magazine
pictures of reptiles and insects and have children draw settings that would
camouflage the creatures.
Play "Ants in My Pants" on Joe Scruggs' Late Last Night.
Scruggs describes the day when ants crawled up his pants and he does a crazy
dance. Have children use their imagination and move to Scruggs' directions.
Read The Girl Who Wore Snakes or A
Snake In The House.Play
a snake line game. All children line up behind each other holding their hands
on the waist of the person before them. The leader tries to touch the snake's
tail (last person) taking everyone else with him. When he succeeds, he goes to
the end of the snake and a new leader takes his place at the head.
Share the book In The Tall, Tall Grass. Encourage
children to repeat the delicious phrases, "crunch, munch, caterpillars
lunch" and "rich, ratch, moles scratch.
Children may also pantomime the antics of the animals who
live in the tall, tall grass. Invite children to draw their own pictures of an
insects' view of the world.
Bees
Here is the beehive,
(Have fist closed at beginning of rhyme)
But where are all the bees?
Hidden away
Where nobody sees.
Soon they'll come
Creeping out of the hive.
1, 2, 3, 4, 5
(Open one finger at a time as you count)
BUZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!
Little Ladybugs
I saw a little ladybug flying in the air,
But when I tried to catch her, two bugs were there.
Two bugs flew up in a tree.
I tiptoed very quietly, and then I saw three.
Three little ladybugs I looked for one more.
I saw one sitting on the ground: that made four.
Four little lady bugs another one arrived.
I saw her sitting on a flower, and that made five.
Five little lady bugs, all red and black
I clapped my hands and shouted, and they all flew back.
1, 2, 3
1, 2, 3, there's a bug on me!
(Pretend to brush it off)
Where did it go?
(Look around)
I don't know.
(Shrug)
The Reptile Zoo
Sung to the tune of "Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush"
Chorus:
Let's go to the Reptile Zoo, the Reptile Zoo, the Reptile Zoo
There's fun for me and fun for you at the Reptile Zoo in the morning.
Verses:
(Act out each motion described)
1. This is the way the lizards crawl.
2. This is the way the rattle snakes hiss.
3. This is the way the turtles walk.
4. This is the way the alligators eat.
5. This is the way the crocodiles stare.
