READING ADVENTURE TREASURE CHEST KIT #29
ALL ABOUT PETS

This Reading Adventure Treasure Chest Kit has been assembled to provide a thematic list of storytime materials for use by enhanced members and their patrons.  The kit is geared toward the preschool age group yet is flexible enough to capture the interest of toddlers and early school age children.  The Activity Ideas are designed to be aids to use the materials listed in the kits.

ACTIVITY IDEAS AND FINGERPLAYS

Hold the kitten puppet and ask the children to make the kind of sounds this animal would make. Let each child stroke the kitten puppet. Ask the children what they would name the cat and how they would care for a cat if they had one.

Share the wordless picture book Good Dog, Carl. Then ask the children to make up and draw or tell stories about what kind of baby-sitter their favorite dog would make.

Have children bring in pictures of their own pets. Let children share these with their friends as they describe how they help to take care of their pets. Have them draw pictures of themselves and their pets.

Let your children's interest in pets take you into scientific investigations with Pint-Size Science.

Go for a walk and count the number of dogs and cats seen. Were there more dogs or cats?

Puppy's Doghouse
This is puppy's doghouse
(Put tips of fingers together)
This is puppy's bed
(Hands flat, palms upward)
This is puppy's pan of milk
(Cup hands together like bowl)
Where he can be fed.
This is puppy's collar
(Encircle neck with fingers)
His name is on it, too.
Take a stick and throw it
(Make throwing motion)
And he'll bring it back to you!
(Clap hands rapidly)

Five Little Kittens
Five little kittens standing in a row
(Hold up fingers of left hand)
They nod their heads to the children, so.
(Bend fingers forward)
They run to the left, they run to the right,
(Wiggle fingers left and right)
They stand up & stretch in the bright sunlight
(Stretch fingers slowly)
Along comes a dog, who's in for some fun,
(Move right fist toward left)
M-e-o-w, see those kitties run.
(Run left fingers behind back)

Cats Meow
Little kittens softly say,
Meow, Meow, Meow
(softly and weakly)
Mother cats with love say,
Meow, Meow, Meow
(lovingly)
Big tom cats cry out,
Meow, Meow, Meow
(loudly)
And wild cats scream about,
Meow, Meow, Meow
(wildly and loudly)
