This Reading Adventure
Treasure Chest Kit has been assembled to provide a thematic list of storytime
materials for use by enhanced members and their patrons. The kit is
geared toward the preschool age group yet is flexible enough to capture the
interest of toddlers and early school age children. The Activity Ideas are designed to be aids to use the
materials listed in the kits.
If you would like more information concerning this project, contact SERLS via

Before
sharing the big book Who
Is The Beast? tell your children the title of the book but do not show them
the cover. Ask them to predict what or who they think the book will be about.
After reading the story ask: Were any of the guesses you made before we read
the story correct? Did the other animals have good reasons to fear the tiger?
Would the tiger harm any of them?
Listen to Ella Jenkins' recording Jambo And Other Call And Response
Songs And Chants as your class works together to create a jungle mural.
Walking
Through the Jungle
Make a circle, tiptoe around the room chanting:
Walking through the jungle
What did I see?
A big green crocodile
Was snapping at me!
Walking through the jungle
What did I see?
A long green snake
Was hissing at me!
Walking through the jungle
What did I see?
A big brown bear
was growling at me!
Walking through the jungle
What did I see?
A little tiny bird
Was singing just for me!
Walking through the jungle
What did I see?
A little brown monkey
was chattering at me!
This Little Tiger
(Recite this as you count your fingers)
This little tiger is very wild,
(Thumb)
This little tiger is a loving child.
(Pointer finger)
This little tiger has some big black spots.
(Middle finger)
This little tiger has small black dots;
(Ring finger)
This little tiger likes to prowl and smell,
(Little finger)
But his teeth are too small to bite very well.
Five Little Monkeys and a Crocodile
Five little monkeys swinging in a tree.
(Swing one hand back and forth)
Along came a crocodile as hungry as can be.
(Other hand is a crocodile)
Snap! went the crocodile
(Crocodile bites one finger; bend down one finger and repeat)
Four little monkeys swinging in a tree.
Along came a crocodile as hungry as can be.
Snap! went the crocodile.
Three little monkeys swinging in a tree.
Along came a crocodile as hungry as can be.
Snap! went the crocodile.
Two little monkeys swinging in a tree.
Along came a crocodile as hungry as can be.
Snap! Went the crocodile.
One little monkey swinging in a tree.
Along came a crocodile as hungry as can be.
Snap! went the crocodile.
No little monkeys swinging in a tree.
Away went the crocodile as happy as can be!
