ACTIVITY IDEAS AND FINGERPLAYS

Read and sing Old MacDonald Had A Farm. Then invite children to make animal stick puppets. Give each child a paper plate to color as an animal face. Then use paint stirrers, rulers or dowels to make stick puppets. Sing the song again using the stick puppets.

Introduce several stories with the lamb puppet. Let each child pet and cuddle the lamb. Children can make their own lamb puppets out of brown paper lunch bags and cotton balls. Make a "wooly" lamb by gluing cotton balls onto the face of the puppet. Invite children to imitate the sounds of lambs and sheep. Use the puppets as you sing Mary Had A Little Lamb and recite Little Bo Peep.

The cassette Girls And Boys Come Out To Play is a delightful change from most Mother Goose recordings. The Barolk Folk use the baroque style of music to present familiar Mother Goose songs. Children will be surprised to hear these "different" versions of their old favorites.

Play "Put the Snout on the Pig." Cut a 15 inch diameter circle from posterboard. Draw inverted triangles for the pig's ears on the top of the circle. Color the face pink if you have not used pink posterboard. Cut a 4 inch diameter circle from the remaining posterboard for a snout. Draw two circles for nostrils. Invite the children to pin the snout on the pig, using tape to hold it in place.

The Farm
I went to visit a farm one day:
I saw a cow across the way,
And what d'you think I heard it say?
MOO, MOO, MOO.
(Repeat using different animals)

Little Piggy-Wig
Little piggy-wig on the farm close by,
(Raise one thumb)
All by himself he ran away from the sty.
The dog said "Woff,"
The cow said "Moo,"
The sheep said "Baa,"
The dove said "Coo,"
Little piggy-wig began to cry,
And as fast as he could he ran back to the sty.
(Hide thumb behind back)

White Sheep
This is the white sheep,
(Left hand is the sheep and right hand the shears)
The farmer cuts off the wool one day.
(Index and middle fingers make the blades that open and close)
The wool was spun into thread so fine,
And made into cloth for this coat of mine
