MORE ABOUT PETS

This Reading Adventure Treasure Chest Kit has been assembled to provide a thematic list of storytime materials for use by enhanced members and their patrons.  The kit is geared toward the preschool age group yet is flexible enough to capture the interest of toddlers and early school age children.  The Activity Ideas are designed to be aids to use the materials listed in the kits.

ACTIVITY IDEAS AND FINGERPLAYS

"Let's be puppy dogs" is all you'll have to say and your preschoolers will fill in the rest. Invite the children to pretend they are playing outside, jumping, and finding a bone. Have the Puppet Dog do the activities along with the children. Ask the children to bark as if they wanted something to eat and then to bark as if they want to be petted. Continue this creative dramatic activity by inviting your class to pretend to be other animals: they can be spider on all fours, a seal with their legs dragging behind, a kangaroo by squatting and jumping, or a snake by crawling on the floor.

Read No Plain Pets and then ask each child to draw a picture of the pet he or she would like to have.

Watch the VHS which features Doris Dingle and her three delightful cats. Suddenly a ferocious storm burst upon them. In spite of her fear, Doris Dingle makes a plan to save herself and her cats. After viewing this film you may want to discuss issues of friendship and trust, individual uniqueness or dealing with an emergency.

My Pets
I have five pets
(Hold up 5 fingers)
That I'd like you to meet.
They all live on Mulberry Street.
This is my chicken,
(Point to little finger)
The smallest of all.
He comes running whenever I call
This is my duckling.
(Point to ring finger)
He says: Quack, quack, quack,"
As he shakes the water from his back.
Here is my rabbit, he runs from his pen
(Point to middle finger)
Then I must put him back again.
This is my kitten.
(Point to second finger)
Her coat is black and white.
She loves to sleep on my pillow at night
Here is my puppy who has lots of fun.
(Point to thumb)
He chases the others and makes them run.
(Move thumb slowly and fingers rapidly)

My Puppy
I like to pet my puppy,
He has such nice soft fur.
And if I don't pull his tail,
He won't say Gr-r-r.

Puppy's Doghouse
This is puppy's doghouse
(Put tips of fingers together)
This is puppy's bed
(Hands flat, palms upward)
This is puppy's pan of milk
(Cup hands together like bowl)
Where he can be fed.
This is puppy's collar
(Encircle neck with fingers)
His name is on it, too.
Take a stick and throw it
(Make throwing motion)
And he'll bring it back to you!
(Clap hands rapidly)
