ACTIVITY IDEAS AND FINGERPLAYS

After viewing the VHS Happy Birthday, Moon have the children draw pictures of the birthday presents they would like to give to the moon. Paste a white moon onto each child's picture. Invite the children to talk about their choices of gifts as they share their moon and gift pictures with the class.

Have an Un-Birthday Party when it is a celebration only if it isn't your birthday. (Make sure you choose a day when no one has a birthday). Make un-birthday cards for family and friends. Listen to "The Unbirthday Song" on Sharon, Lois and Bram's Happy Birthday cassette tape.

Share Bake-A-Cake Book. Make cakes and candles out of playdough or plasticene. You can make your own playdough using the following simple recipe: 3 parts non-self rising wheat flour, 1 part salt, 1 part water, 3 tablespoons salad oil. Mix until pliable. Add food coloring with the water. Store in an airtight container for up to two weeks. Let the children mold their cakes using muffin pans. Let them roll out candles using rolling pins.

Five Birthday Candles
Five birthday candles;
Wish there were more.
Blow out one
Then there are four.
Four birthday candles
Pretty as can be.
Blow out one.
Then there are three.
Three birthday candles;
Mother bought them new.
Blow out one.
Then there are two.
Two birthday candles
Birthday cakes are fun.
Blow out one.
Then there is one.
One birthday candle
A birthday wish is fun.
Blow out one.
Then there is none.

Balloons for a Party
Here are balloons for a party,
For it is a special day today.
There are balloons for all my friends
Who are coming over to play.
Here is a pretty, round, blue balloon,
Blue as my kitten's eyes.
Here is a flaming, round, red balloon,
Just about your size.
Here is a happy, round, yellow balloon,
Yellow as bright sunshine.
Here is a lovely, round, purple balloon
Like purple grapes on a vine.
Here is a little, round, orange balloon
Like oranges from a store.
And now there are no more.
