This Reading Adventure
Treasure Chest Kit has been assembled to provide a thematic list of storytime
materials for use by enhanced members and their patrons. The kit is
geared toward the preschool age group yet is flexible enough to capture the
interest of toddlers and early school age children. The Activity Ideas are designed to be aids to use the
materials listed in the kits.

Teacher's Guide |
Read Chickens Aren't The Only Ones which is a book in rhyme about
all the animals which are born from eggs. Then shareEgg! by A. J. Wood.
Invite children to guess which kind of creature hatches out of the various eggs
before you unfold the page for the answer.
On both the VHS I'm A 3-Toed Dinosaur and the cassette
Dinosaur Choir you will find a wonderful song called "I'm a 3-Toes,
Triple-Eyed, Double-Jointed Dinosaur." Children will quickly learn the
words and sing along.
Read What's In The Prehistoric Forest? Let children guess what's
hidden behind each flap before they turn the flap.
Introduce several dinosaur stories with the dinosaur egg puppet. First
ask children what they think will hatch out of the egg. After all of the
responses, pop the dinsaur head out of the egg.
Play The Dinosaur Egg Question Game. You will need white poster
board, felt pens, a large bowl, sand, eggs and dinosaur stickers. Draw a large
mother dinosaur on the poster board. Place a bowl full of sand near the mother
dinosaur. Boil eggs, one for each child, and place a dinosaur sticker on each
one. Print a dinosaur brainstrom question on the back of each egg. Dinosaur
brainstorm questions can include the following:
"If dinosaurs were alive today, would that be good? Why?"
" What kind of dinosaur would you like to be?"" If you had a
dinosaur for a pet, where would it sleep?"" What do you think a
dinosaur did for fun?"" What do you think a dinosaur would enjoy
eating, if it lived today?"" What color do you think dinosaurs
were?"
Place the eggs, question-side down, in the middle of the room. Explain
that the mother dinosaur has lost her eggs. Each child, in turn, chooses an
egg, answers the brainstorm question, and places it in the bowls of sand,
sticker-side up, returning it to its mother. At the end of the day, the
children can take their egg home and share the brainstorm question with their
families.
The Dinosaurs
The dinosaurs lived long ago
When life on Earth began.
Some were tall,
(Stretch hands upwards to show height)
And some were small,
(Crouch down low to show height)
Some like water,
(Make swimming motions)
Some land.
(Stomp feet)
Pteranodons had leathery wings,
(Flap arms)
Brontosaurs, long necks
(Hands on jaw, palms up, as if stretching neck upwards)
And the meanest dinosaur of all
Was the Tyrannosaurus Rex!
(Feet apart, hands clawlike, scowl, and growl)
Mighty Dinosaur
Here is a dinosaur,
(With left arm bent upright at elbows, hold left hand up with palm facing
body and left thumb (the dinosaur's head) extended. Hold right hand-with palm
facing body; place back of right hand against left hand palm. Position right
hand slightly lower than left, so that when the right thumb is extended (to be
a tail), it is lower than left thumb)
With tail and neck so long,
(Wiggle both thumbs)
This dinosaur is mighty, And strong!
(Keep hands together, move arms up and down)
All day she eats, plants of green.
(Tilt arms to left, wiggle left thumb)
She's the biggest dinosaur, you've ever seen!
