This Reading Adventure Treasure Chest Kit has been assembled to provide a
thematic list of storytime materials for use by enhanced members and their
patrons. The kit is geared toward the preschool age group yet is flexible
enough to capture the interest of toddlers and early school age children.
The Activity Ideas are designed to be aids to use the
materials listed in the kits.

Play "Jump for Joy." Prepare cards with one letter of the
alphabet on each card. Show the children the card with the letter
"J." Tell them to jump every time they see the letter "J."
Show them the card with the word "Jump" written on it, so that they
can see that "Jump" stars with "J." Hold up one alphabet
card at a time. Insert the letter "J" about every three or four
cards. Play this game using another letter such as "G" for gallop, "S"
for sit, "H" for hop and so on.
Children always enjoy celebrating birthdays. Play "The Birthday
Game" which lets each child celebrate their birthday no matter what day it
is. Choose one child. Everyone recites the following poem:
Apples,
peaches, pears and plums,
Tell me when your birthday comes.
January, February, March, April, May, June,
July, August, September,
October, November, December?
When the children reach the month of the chosen child, the child stands up.
Repeat the poem and let another child have a turn.
The cassette "Happy And You Know
It" contains several fingerplays and action
songs to enjoy all year long. "Mr. Sun," and
"Everybody Loves Saturday Night" are good songs to try with your
group. Other favorites include "This Little Light Of Mine,"
"Happy Birthday,"and
"Skinnamarink"
Sun
I am the sun
(Arms circle over head)
Shinning hot and bright,
When I go to sleep,
(Rest head on hands)
Day turns into night.
When I wake up
(Stretch, yawn)
I stretch and yawn
(Repeat)
And turn the darkness
(Circle arm)
Into dawn.
What Does the Weather Say?
What does the wind say?
"Whoo, whoo, whoo"
(Howling)
What does the hail say?
"Clatter, clatter, clatter.
(Noisily)
What does the rain say?
"Pitter-pat, pitter-pat, pitter-pat."
(Evenly)
What does the sleet say?
"Shush, shush, shush."
(Soft slidding sound)
What does the sun say?
What does the sun say?
Here Is the World
Here is our world, our big round world.
(spread arms)
Here are the mountains high.
(stretch arms up)
Here is a fish that swims in the sea.
(move hand back and forth)
Here are the birds that fly.
(motion of flying)
Here is the sun, the bright, warm sun.
(make circle with arms)
Here are the leaves that fall.
(let raised hands fall gently)
Here is our world, our big, round world.
See the wonder of it all!
(spread arms
)
