This Reading Adventure Treasure
Chest Kit has been assembled to provide a thematic list of storytime materials
for use by enhanced members and their patrons. The kit is geared toward
the preschool age group yet is flexible enough to capture the interest of
toddlers and early school age children. The Activity Ideas are designed to be aids to use the
materials listed in the kits.

Begin your storytime with the hello-song on Linda Arnolds' Peppermint
Wings cassette. Arnold's call and response song "Hello" features
greetings in French, Spanish, Swedish, Hebrew, German, Japanese, Chinese,
Italian, Russian, Hindu, Yugoslavian and more. You might want to end storytime
with "Read A Book."
Ask the children to draw pictures of what they imagine they will look
like next year, when they are a parent and when they are a grandparent.
Invite the children to make "I Am Special Books." On one page
suggest children color with their favorite colors. On another page help children
fill in the blanks of the following "Me Poem:"
Mirror mirror on the wall,
Look at me when I call.
See my _________ hair (color)
See my _________ eyes (color)
See my _________ skin (color)
And my _________ size (tall/short)
Mirror, mirror, you're the best
Now I'll let you take a rest.
I Am Special
Sung to the tune of "Are You Sleeping"
I am special! I am special!
If you look, you will see,
Someone very special, someone very special,
Yes, It's me! Yes, it's me!
Growing
Flowers grow like this.
(Cup hands)
Tress grow like this.
(Spread arms)
I grow,
(Jump and stretch)
Just like that!
If You Want to Grow Up Healthy
(Sing to the tune of "If You're Happy and You Know It")
If you want to grow up healthy, eat like this.
Eat a carrot and an apple and a fish.
Don't leave your mashed potatoes,
Or that slice of red tomato.
If you want to grow up healthy, eat like this.
(Make fist to show muscle)
If you want to grow up puny, eat like this.
Snack on pop and cake and bags of tater chips.
Make room for gooey candy.
Oh, it's oh so very dandy.
If you want to grow up puny, eat like this.
(Droop shoulders, arms limp)
But if you want to grow up healthy, eat like this.
Try the things your mom puts upon your dish.
Try fruits and vegetables,
Bread and whole grain cereal.
You can grow up strong and healthy if you wish!
(Make fist to show muscle)
Brushing Teeth
Up and down and round and round
(Move right pointer up and down, and round in front of mouth)
I brush my teeth to keep them sound;
To keep them sound and clean and white
(Point to teeth)
I brush them morning, noon and night.
