TREASURE CHEST KIT #9:
EVERYBODY HAS A FAMILY

This Reading Adventure Treasure Chest Kit has been assembled to provide a thematic list of storytime materials for use by enhanced members and their patrons.  The kit is geared toward the preschool age group yet is flexible enough to capture the interest of toddlers and early school age children.  The Activity Ideas are designed to be aids to use the materials listed in the kits.

ACTIVITY IDEAS AND FINGERPLAYS

Read The Relatives Came. Invite children to share stories about times when relatives visited their house.

Have children draw a picture of a favorite relative. Ask: What do you like most about this person? What kinds of things do you enjoy doing together? If you could tell this person how you feel about them, what would you say? Print children's messages on their pictures.

Have each child make a picture of their family's favorite things. Include photographs. Invite children to bring in and share their family's favorite book.

Read The Three Bears and then have the children take turns acting this story out using the toy bears and house.

Invite Grandmothers and Grandfathers to the center for a special tea and sing this song to the tune of "My Bonnie Lies Over The Ocean:"

My Grandma is coming to visit,
My Grandma is coming to play.
My Grandma is coming to visit,
She's coming to visit today.
Refrain:Waiting, waiting,
waiting for Grandma today, today.
Waiting, waiting,
Oh waiting for Grandma today.
We'll go for a walk in the park
We'll go for a walk in the zoo,
We'll go for a walk in the park,
I'll hope she will be her soon.
My Grandpa is coming to visit, . . .

This Is The Mother
This is the mother, kind and dear,
(Make a fist, then point to thumb)
This is the father, sitting near,
(Show each finger in turn)
This is the brother, strong and tall,
This is the sister who plays with her ball,
This is the baby, the littlest of all,
See my whole family, large and small.
(Wiggle all of the fingers)
